Improving the environment and creating world peace

Creating world peace is not the reason that most people give for why they want to learn to meditate. Yet this was Maharishi's goal when he started to spread the technique of Transcendental Meditation around the world many years ago - and it still is. Many indications of the success of this venture have already been noticed.

Maharishi pointed out that if people do not know how to live in tune with Natural Law, they will create stress, sickness and suffering. Stressed individuals are the units of a stressed society, and if stress is allowed to build up in a society it will inevitably break out as high crime, social unrest, strikes, terrorism and even war - the situation in which we find ourselves today.

Around the world and throughout the ages, governments have found that it is not possible to legislate against conflict. Wars are fought in the minds of men, and the solution has to come from within.

As long ago as 1974 it was noted that where the proportion of people in any community practising Transcendental Meditation reached a particular threshold (about 1% of the population) changes started to occur in social trends. Crime, road accidents and hospital admissions started to decrease.

Moreover when the meditators were practising an advanced technique of Transcendental Meditation (the TM-Sidhi programme) and were able to practise in a group, the effect was much more powerful and the number of meditators required was correspondingly less.

This effect is known as the Maharishi Effect, in honour of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the founder of Transcendental Meditation who predicted it in the early 1960's.

It may seem surprising that a few people meditating can, by the effect of their practice, influence the behaviour of others in the environment. It certainly challenges some commonly-held viewpoints about the nature of cause and effect. But perhaps it is intuitively sensible to feel that our behaviour is affected by the quality of the environment in which we find ourselves.

Either way, the effect is irrefutable. The effect has been noticed again and again, and quantitative data have been gathered which have been published in scientific journals.

This research gives great hope to those who have the vision of a better quality of life for mankind, and has led to major initiatives in all parts of the world to establish permanent "coherence-creating groups" of people who will practise Transcendental Meditation together on a daily basis in order to wash away the stress which would otherwise accumulate in the atmosphere.

Research shows that Transcendental Meditation leads to:

Professor Huw Dixon
"I have been following the research on the Maharishi Effect as it has developed over the last twenty years.

There is now a strong and coherent body of evidence showing that the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programme provides a simple cost-effective solution to many of the social problems we face today.

This research and its conclusions are so strong that it demands attention from those responsible for government policy."
